Determining the best sequence and distribution of stops across vehicles, given time windows, capacity and driving times. Beyond a handful of stops there are too many possible routes to oversee by hand, and that is where the gain sits.
What is the difference from a navigation system?
A navigation system finds the fastest way between two points. Route optimisation decides which stops belong to which trip, in what order, across all vehicles at once — and replans en route when a rush order, congestion or a breakdown arrives.
What data do you need?
Addresses with time windows, capacity per vehicle, and realistic stop durations. That last one is often underestimated: if the time unloading actually takes is not in the plan, the whole route is wrong.
When does route optimisation pay off?
Once planners are solving the puzzle by hand every day, or in urban distribution with many stops and tight time windows. With fixed routes that rarely change the gain is small.
